Solana Community Approves Alpenenglow Upgrade with Overwhelming Majority
The Solana community has given its stamp of approval to Alpenenglow, a highly anticipated upgrade aimed at significantly boosting the scalability of the blockchain network. With a resounding 98.27% of votes in favor, the proposal has set the stage for a major overhaul of the network’s consensus algorithm.
The Governance proposal, which was put to vote, garnered an overwhelming majority, with only 1.05% of votes against and 0.69% abstaining. A total of 52% of participants took part in the voting process, demonstrating a strong sense of community engagement and commitment to the upgrade.
According to Solana Status, the proposal has passed with 98.27% of votes in favor, paving the way for the implementation of Alpenenglow. This upgrade promises to bring about a significant reduction in transaction latency, from 12 seconds to 150 ms, thereby increasing the network’s transaction processing speed by a factor of 100.
What is Alpenenglow and How Does it Work?
Alpenenglow is a consensus mechanism upgrade that aims to achieve faster transaction processing times through the introduction of two new consensus points: votor and rotor. These replace the current proof-of-history and tower Byzantine fault tolerance (TBFT) mechanisms, which enable transactions to ensure safety and efficiency on the Solana network.
The votor consensus point reduces the final validity times of transactions, while the rotor replaces the proof-of-history time stamping system and implements a new data distribution model. This model drastically shortens the time nodes take to agree on the network status, resulting in faster transaction processing times.
