Introduction to BTCFI: A Niche Space for Insiders or a Mainstream Opportunity?
Despite significant investments and a clear demand for returns, most Bitcoin owners have never tried Bitcoin DeFi (BTCFI) because the platforms feel complex and unknown. A recent survey by Gomining, in collaboration with Crypto.news, highlights a gap between the ambitions of the industry and its actual adoption. The survey reveals that almost 80% of BTC owners have never used BTCFI, indicating a lack of awareness and understanding of these platforms.
The Problem of Complexity and Awareness
The problem lies in the fact that current platforms for crypto insiders are developed in a way that confuses or intimidates potential users, making them unaware of the existence of these products. The survey shows that 77% of Bitcoin owners have never tried BTCFI, and more than 40% of those surveyed stated that they commit less than 20% of their Bitcoin to BTCFI products due to trust and complexity concerns. Mark Zalan, CEO of Gomining, notes that there is an “enormous appetite for these options, but the industry has built products for crypto-native, not for everyday Bitcoin holders”.

Lack of Awareness and Communication
Perhaps the clearest challenge for BTCFI is awareness. Almost two-thirds of the respondents, or about 65%, could not name a single BTCFI project. For Zalan, this indicates a communication failure, stating that “this is not a failure of Bitcoin owners to keep up. The BTCFI industry has to communicate more effectively with their target market. If two-thirds of potential users cannot name a single project in their space, they are faced with an adoption challenge that can be solved with education”.

Opportunities and Challenges
The survey paints a picture of a sector with potential and barriers. Bitcoin owners clearly want earnings and liquidity options, but they do not rush to BTCFI platforms due to trust problems, complexity, and low brand recognition. This contradiction creates both challenges and opportunities. If BTCFI platforms invest more in clear communication and uncomplicated onboarding, they may be able to win the wider Bitcoin audience. However, if not, there is a risk of BTCFI remaining a niche space for crypto insiders rather than a mainstream opportunity for millions of Bitcoin owners.
