Crypto X reacts to Mamdani’s victory

Introduction to Zohran Mamdani’s Victory

On November 4, Democratic Party candidate Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, defeating former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and GOP favorite Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s victory has sparked a flurry of reactions from the crypto community, with some expressing support, others anger, and many remaining indifferent.

Mamdani is not an outspoken opponent of cryptocurrencies, nor is he a prominent ally. However, his commitment to making New York an affordable city for working families has drawn attention from the crypto sector. His programs include freezing rents, introducing free buses, and building affordable housing, which could have significant implications for the city’s economy and potentially impact the crypto industry.

Mamdani’s Campaign and Victory

Mamdani’s campaign focused on increasing taxes on the rich and corporations, which has led critics to speculate that his victory could trigger an exodus of wealthy individuals and businesses in favor of a softer jurisdiction. Given that NYC is home to nearly 350,000 millionaires, this could have far-reaching consequences for the city’s economy and the crypto market.

Over a million of New York’s eight million voters cast their ballots for Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist. He was the first Muslim to head the city office and managed to win over young voters, particularly in precincts where the average age of registered voters was 45 or younger. Mamdani’s viral political TikTok and Instagram videos also played a significant role in his campaign, helping him connect with voters and spread his message.

Crypto Community Reacts to Mamdani’s Victory

The crypto community has responded to Mamdani’s victory with a mix of opinions. Austin Campbell of the Aleo Foundation and founder of the Zero Knowledge Group compared Mamdani to President Trump, noting that both lacked extensive political experience before assuming their respective leadership positions and relied heavily on social media to spread their message. Campbell also pointed out that Trump’s failure to ban TikTok in the US only helped Mamdani gain more attention from voters.

Other notable figures in the crypto space, such as ProCap CEO Anthony Pompliano and Wolf of All Streets podcast host Scott Melker, have remained quiet or expressed skepticism about Mamdani’s policies. Pompliano criticized socialism but noted that the city would continue to stand for ambition and opportunity, while Melker stated that mayors come and go and the political pendulum continues to swing, concluding that New York “will be fine.”

Mamdani and Cryptocurrencies

There is limited information available on Mamdani’s stance on cryptocurrencies. However, during his campaign, he supported stricter regulation of cryptocurrencies in New York, citing the need to protect retail investors from low-income groups who suffer the most from the collapse of cryptocurrency companies. The city is currently working on two crypto laws, A7788 and A8966, which aim to allow residents to pay legal fees and fines in cryptocurrencies and increase taxes on crypto transactions, respectively.

As the crypto community continues to react to Mamdani’s victory, it remains to be seen how his policies will impact the industry. With his commitment to making New York an affordable city for working families and his potential impact on the crypto market, Mamdani’s victory is certainly a development worth watching.
