The ruble-backed stablecoin, A7A5, has successfully undergone an independent audit that verified 100% fiat backing for its circulating supply. Kreston Bishkek, a licensed member of the global Kreston network that operates in over 100 countries, conducted the audit.

Unlike Tether, the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation, which is yet to undergo a financial audit, the A7A5 promises transparency through quarterly audits and a state-supervised model.

The Ruble-Backed Stablecoin’s Yield-Generating Capability Sets it Apart

In April, earlier this year, Kyrgyzstan’s new digital asset framework facilitated the launch of the A7A5 ruble-backed stablecoin. A local company, Old Vector, issued the tokens under the country’s progressive crypto legislation, with official regulatory approval.

What sets apart the A7A5 stablecoin is its ability to generate yield for holders by leveraging Russia’s high interest rates, unlike other stablecoins that merely hold reserves.

The stablecoin’s fiat reserves also earn interest at the Russian Central Bank’s refinance rate, which decentralized finance strategies can further supplement.

Interestingly, a daily yield distribution system automatically pays 50% of the earned interest to A7A5 holders within 24 hours and requires no stake or user intervention. The remaining yield most likely contributes to reserve growth, operational expenses, or other yield mechanisms.

Furthermore, Russian banks with correspondent access to Kyrgyzstan hold the ruble-backed stablecoin’s reserves to improve financial efficiency and facilitate cross-border transactions.

A7A5’s Circulating Supply Crossed $140m Within a Week of Its Launch

The stablecoin debuted on Meer Exchange, a digital asset platform based in Kyrgyzstan. The platform trades all major stablecoin pairs, including USDT, and provides institutional and retail investors with compliance-ready ruble-backed assets.

Although the A7A5 stablecoin is currently limited to Meet Exchange, it is due for expansion into decentralised trading platforms like Uniswap.

Interestingly, within a week of its launch, the A7A5 stablecoin’s circulating supply crossed $140 million. This suggests a strong demand from crypto users in Russia and CIS nations, primarily because of the ongoing sanctions and restrictions on the USD-linked stablecoin.

If authorities integrate the ruble-backed stablecoin into DeFi lending protocols and liquidity pools, it could unlock yield opportunities and trade strategies that could potentially leverage interest-bearing ruble reserves against lower-yield stablecoins.

Regulatory Support, Strategic Positioning, and the Road Ahead

Kyrgyzstan has emerged as a regional crypto hub and has introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework to attract investors.

As one of Central Asia’s fully regulated crypto markets, it has attracted major players, including Binance, which recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Kyrgyz authorities to build the nation’s digital asset infrastructure.

Furthermore, Russia’s evolving stance on cryptocurrencies could further boost demand for ruble-backed stablecoins like the A7A5.

However, the primary challenge for the A7A5 stablecoin is its scalability and increasing its use cases. To increase its accessibility, the regulators need to expand A7A5’s listings on centralised and decentralised exchanges.

Also, efforts should be undertaken to integrate the stablecoin with lending platforms and payment networks to establish it as more than just a trading token.
