Memecoins: Not Dead, But Evolving
Despite the current downturn in the market and the fading narrative, memecoins are not a thing of the past, according to Keith A. Grossman, president of payments infrastructure company MoonPay. Grossman believes that memecoins will make a comeback, but in a different form. The real innovation of memecoins lies in their ability to tokenize attention easily and at a low cost using blockchain technology, democratizing access to the attention economy.
Grossman pointed out that before the emergence of crypto, attention could only be monetized by platforms, brands, and a small group of influencers. However, with the advent of memecoins, everyone can now participate in the attention economy. “Likes, trends, inside jokes, and communities created enormous economic value,” Grossman said.

The Rise and Fall of Memecoins
The memecoin sector was one of the best-performing crypto asset sectors in 2024, with many tokens experiencing significant gains. However, the market collapsed in 2025, with several high-profile token implosions and harsh criticism from analysts. The collapse was further exacerbated by the failure of several high-profile tokens, including the Trump Memecoin, which was launched by US President Donald Trump in January 2025. The token reached a high of $75 before plunging over 90% to around $5.42.

Lessons from the Past
Grossman compared the current bleak outlook for memecoins to the predictions of social media’s decline after the failure of the first generation of social platforms in the early 2000s. However, the rise of later companies like Facebook and Twitter turned the niche sector into a cultural phenomenon. Similarly, Grossman believes that memecoins will evolve and return in a new form, democratizing access to the attention economy and creating new opportunities for participants.
