Do Kwon, the co-founder of Terraform Labs, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit fraud. During the hearing, Engelmayer heard from several of Terraform’s victims, who shared their stories of financial loss and devastation. One victim, Tatiana Dontsova, recounted how she had sold her apartment in Moscow to invest with Kwon, only to see her $81,000 investment dwindle to just $13. Dontsova is now officially homeless, highlighting the severe consequences of Kwon’s actions.
Victims Share Their Stories
According to prosecutors, there were approximately 16,500 victims of Terraform’s collapse, as revealed in the company’s ongoing bankruptcy case. Six of these victims were given the opportunity to address the court by telephone, sharing their experiences and describing the financial losses they suffered due to Kwon’s fraudulent activities.
Kwon’s sentence includes credit for time served in the U.S. and 17 months in prison before extradition. After serving seven and a half years, Kwon may be extradited to South Korea, where he faces an additional 40 years in prison. Engelmayer emphasized that Kwon’s fraud was “unusually serious” and that his actions were “despicable” because they were committed under the guise of trust.
