World, a biometric identity verification project founded by Sam Altman, has recently updated its app to include an encrypted chat service with crypto payment integration. This upgrade enables users to send, deposit, and withdraw cryptocurrencies within the World Wallet and virtual accounts, similar to Venmo. The new app supports a range of cryptocurrencies, including USDC, EURC, wrapped Bitcoin, Ethereum, and over 100 other tokens.
World App Upgrade and Features
The World app was officially launched in 2023 with the mission of providing tools to verify human identity in a time of AI manipulation. The recent upgrade was unveiled at World headquarters in San Francisco, where Sam Altman and World co-founder and CEO Alex Blania discussed the innovations. The developers referred to the new upgrade as a “super app,” highlighting its end-to-end encryption and crypto integration features.
The app’s chat service displays blue bubbles for verified individuals and gray bubbles for those who have not verified themselves, ensuring the confidentiality of conversations. Additionally, profile photos are compared with the Orb image stored on the user’s device to verify identity.
Virtual Bank Accounts and Expanded Crypto Features
In May, World launched its iris scanning project for US customers, allowing users to create a unique “IrisCode” to verify their identity. The World app already functions as a digital wallet, but the new version introduces virtual bank accounts, enabling users to receive their salary directly, make deposits from bank accounts, and convert funds into cryptocurrency.
The company stated that users can exchange and trade over 100 supported assets, including native World chain tokens and RWA assets such as tokenized gold. The new version of the app highlights the company’s intention to expand partnerships and build a more integrated ecosystem focused on cryptocurrency usability.
